As the calendar flips into July, summer signals a much-anticipated break from textbooks and early morning alarms for many middle and high schoolers. But what if this summer could be more than just a break? What if it could be a powerful “Summer Reset” – a time to recharge, discover, and create incredible new opportunities, even if you’re already a few weeks into it?
For students (yes, you!), I am not suggesting that you add more work into your free time, but instead consider some strategic, intentional choices that can set you up for a fantastic next school year and beyond. For parents, teachers, and those of us in educational circles, it’s recognizing the immense potential of these months and guiding our young people to make the most of them.
So, how can we reposition summer as our hiatus from the grind of the previous school year into a springboard for new opportunities?
For Students: Your Summer…Your Power-Up!
This summer is your chance to take the reins and design a season that’s both fun and fulfilling. Think of it as a personalized “power-up” for your brain, your skills, and your spirit. It’s never too late to start!
- Explore Passions (No Grades Required!): What truly excites you? This is the perfect time to dive deep without the pressure of exams.
- Creative Pursuits: Ever wanted to learn guitar? Try coding? Write a short story? Pick up that sketchbook? Now’s your chance! Online tutorials, community classes, or even just experimenting on your own can open up new worlds.
- Hands-On Learning: Are you curious about engineering? Could you build something cool? Volunteer at a local animal shelter? Get involved in a community garden? These experiences offer real-world skills and insights.
- Digital Deep Dives: Beyond social media, explore educational YouTube channels, podcasts on topics that fascinate you, or online courses in areas like graphic design, photography, or even a new language.
- Skill Up for the Future: Think about skills that will benefit you in school, college, and your future career, even if you don’t know what that career is yet!
- Leadership & Teamwork: Look for opportunities to lead a project, organize an event, or participate in a team activity. Local camps, community organizations, or even starting a small neighborhood initiative can provide these.
- Communication & Public Speaking: Practice these by joining a debate club, volunteering for a cause you care about, or even presenting your summer projects to family and friends.
- Problem-Solving: Tackle a real-world problem, big or small. This could be anything from organizing your room efficiently to helping a local charity with a fundraiser.
- Rest, Rejuvenate, and Reflect: A reset isn’t just about doing more; it’s about doing better.
- Prioritize Downtime: Schedule time for genuine relaxation – reading for pleasure, spending time outdoors, or simply unplugging.
- Reflect and Plan: Take some time to think about what went well this past school year, what you’d like to improve, and what your goals are for the fall. This intentional reflection is incredibly powerful.
- Build Healthy Habits: Summer is a great time to establish routines for sleep, exercise, and healthy eating that you can carry into the school year.
For Parents & Educators: Guiding the Summer Reset

We have a crucial role in empowering young people to embrace this “Summer Reset.” Even if summer plans are already in motion, there’s always room to incorporate elements of growth and exploration.
- Encourage, Don’t Dictate: Offer suggestions and resources, but allow them agency in choosing what resonates with them. The more ownership they have, the more engaged they’ll be.
- Facilitate Exploration: Help them find local camps, online courses, volunteer opportunities, or even just provide the materials for a new hobby. Transportation, access to resources, and a supportive environment make a huge difference.
- Value Unstructured Time: While structured activities are great, remember the importance of free play and unstructured time for creativity and independent thought. Boredom can sometimes be the catalyst for ingenuity!
- Connect Learning to Life: Help them see how their summer activities connect to real-world skills and future opportunities, without turning every activity into a “lesson.”
- Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge their efforts and achievements, no matter how small. This positive reinforcement encourages continued growth.
- Lead by Example: Share your own summer goals, whether it’s learning a new skill, reading a book, or taking on a personal project.
